This CD package is a speculative redesign for acid jazz band Jamiroquai’s album “Travelling Without Moving. It focuses on representing Jamiroquai’s genre roots and the album’s title itself. Jamiroquai, like other acid jazz artists, emerged from the British house/electronica scene, with a strong influence from soul, jazz, and funk music. The base imagery of this design takes its cues from the electronica side of the acid jazz genre, using light as a visual element (in reference to the club scene associated with electronic music). The choice to present moving light plays off of the album’s title. The majority of type chosen for the booklet and package is sans serif and is selected for its ability to create a pseudo-futuristic feel. To represent the jazz/funk/soul aspects of Jamiroquai’s sound, the designed item is presented with a layer of faux distress, creating a feel similar to that of a worn vintage vinyl album sleeve. The title on the cover of the packaging and a select lyric quote on the packaging’s interior is presented in Cooper Black, a type with strong visual connection to the 60s and 70s, driving this vintage feel home.
