A spec ad series for the Edmonton alternative comedy festival Improvaganza.
Improvaganza is a ten-day alternative comedy festival held every June by the Rapid Fire Theatre. Since 2009, Improvaganza had been itegrated the same illustration into their promotional materials. A changing color palette year-to-year is the only delineation between each iteration of the festival. That illustration, created by Jeremy Fish, depicts a human skull combined with adorned with the head and wings of an owl, Groucho glasses, and two crossed AK-47s.
Improv comedy focuses on the creation of something new and impermanent at every performance. By creating a different distinct visual identity each year, the promotional materials of the festival would reflect its subject matter. Visual elements defined by the Jeremy Fish illustration (which Improvaganza has adopted as a logo) would be incorporated into each year’s imagery to retain a sense of unity within the variety. For this iteration of Improvaganza, a teaser newspaper ad, a promotional poster, and a series of guerilla marketing stickers were created.
